Types of Field test of Bricks

Field test of Brick 

Before using Bricks for construction work it must be tested whether it is suitable for Brickwork or not.

Test on Bricks can be carried out on Lab or in a field(if all necessary apparatus available on a field).


There is some important field test of bricks : 1.Absorption test on bricks
2.compressive strength test on bricks
3.Hardness test on bricks
4.shape and size test on bricks
5.color test of bricks
6.Efflorescence test on bricks.

1.Absorption test on bricks:

This test is carried out to find the moisture content absorbed by bricks.In this test, dry sample bricks are taken and then weighted and then they are immersed in a water for a period of 24 hours.After 24 hours, wet bricks are taken out and then weighted.Difference between dry and wet brick gives the amount of water absorption.Amount of good quality bricks should not exceed 20% of its dry weight.

2.Compressive strength test on bricks:

In this test, Brick is placed in compression testing machine and then load is applied in brick until it breaks.At a point it breaks, the value of failure load is noted and the crushing strength of brick is calculated.The minimum crushing strength of brick is 3.5 N/mm2.

3.Hardness test on bricks:

In this test hardness of brick is tested.finger nail is a scratch on the surface of brick if there is no impression on brick then it is the hard brick.

4.Shape and size test on bricks:

Shape and size of bricks should be uniform and same.Randomly take out the bricks from the group and stack them along its length breadth and height and compare if all are of same shape and size then bricks can use for construction.

5.Color test of bricks:

the color of brick should be uniform and bright throughout the body.

6.Efflorescence test on bricks:

Presence of soluble salt on a brick surface can be dangerous.To know the presence of salt bricks are immersed in water for 24 hours and then dry in shade.If there is any white color of deposit in surface then it contains soluble salt then brick is not good for construction
